The cause of your troubles with the lower front bushing are quite simple. I ran into this problem last summer when I changed the front bushings myself (now THAT was a pain...). Anyhow, FYI the rubber of the bushing acutally pushes the little metal pieces (bearing supports, I believe) outward. The easiest way to remove or replace the bolts is to use a large vise-grip, crecent wrench, or c-clamp to press the supports inward--just enough to line up the holes. You see, the problem you were having was with the holes in the support not lining up with the holes in the bushing itself. D'OH!!
