oil filler cap - vacuum leak?

Does anyone have experience with a loose or cracked oil filler cap and/or oil filler tube causing a vacuum leak?
I have a 92 non-turbo with hard starting/running problems, and 99 percent of the evidence is pointing toward a vacuum leak. I'm about to pull off the intake manifold for more exploration, 'cause I can't find anything bad up top.
But ... I vaguely recall that when I first bought the car (approx three months ago), if I loosened the oil cap when the engine was running, there would be hissing and the engine would start to stumble. Now, if I take the cap off, there's no hissing and no difference (which would indicate, IMHO, that it's already leaking, so adding a leak makes no difference).
Has anyone else experienced this kind of leak?
BTW, my "evidence" for a vacuum leak:
--frequent computer codes for "lean mixture" or O2-sensor/vacuum leak.
--I think I can hear a hissing from under the plenum, but can't be sure.
--everything else check out.
