Imaging sound in cars is nearly impossible. Think about the relative distances (the nearest speaker in the dash of my 9k is around a THIRD of the distance to the furthest.) Forget phase control, just managing the lag would be tough. (You could do that with all line-level feeds to the speakers, each with their own amp, and some delays. But why?)
The thing that you CAN do in a car is achive a very nicely coupled listening experience. Punchy enough to feel some bits (if your parked) and bright enough to appreciated some subtleties.
My vote here would be for less money in toys, more money in acoustic treatments. You might want to budget 25% or more of your orignal "Toys" plan to buy various products to deaden the space a bit more. Then buy cheaper toys, and enjoy.
The coolest product is that tar-like sheet material that you peel-and-stick to sheet metal. Lining the door panels (interior, unless you like the old Panzerkampfwagen look) maybe the floor and the hatch will really help. Also working out a better isolation between trunk and cabin would be profitable. (Possibly a neatly fitted piece of Ethofoam on the aft edge of the privacy-lid for 5-doors would be a good start.)
Just some touches to do what you can to lower some exterior noise, OR keep you from disturbing the neighbors when you sit in the garage with Lou Reed "turned up to ELEVEN."
As much as I love sound systems--they were my life for 18 years--I think we all honestly have to remember we are in the car to drive.
(Climbing off soapbox now, apologies for any offense perceived, none was intended)
