a socket wrench is a good idea -as well as some sort of universal joint. I dropped the wrench several times as well - it helps to have some cardboard underath so you don't have to crawl under the car to get your wrench back. The positive supply cable nut is especially troublesome in this regard. As far as physically getting at the starter goes, you might want to remove the rubber elbow that carries air between the air filter and the intake manifold. That and removing the battery freed up a lot of space under the hood of my '87. Last suggestion is to be gentle with the clutch line coming out of the Bell housing. The starter will come out without pulling "really hard," but you'll need to rotate it a few times to find the best fit out of the engine. Be sure to use blue locktite on the bolts when you put the new starter back in.
The job took me 2 hours the first time and ~40 minutes the second (through fourth time)
