Stephen --
The alternator is pretty easy, you have to remove the serpentine belt, the procedure has been covered here before. Have a good local shop rebuild yours, it'll be a fraction of the cost.
The starter can be rebuilt too for a fraction of the cost and if you have the shop put on a new solenoid at the same time it'll be like new. The key as with the alternator is who does the rebuild -- find out who the best in town is, someone that does work for other respected import mechanics. $48.00 is not outrageous for the starter but I've had mine out (91 9KT) in minutes. The trick is a long extension to get at the lower bolt. Make sure you disconnect the battery as you'll be hitting things getting it out. Lean over or climb halfway on the engine to get at it and use a good trouble light. Piece of cake. Good luck.
