Bill,

Thanks for the description of the cleaning of the throttle housing. I didn't know there were products to DIY it. What I DID know is that you HAVE to clean it regularly if you want to prevent your old style TCS to go into LIMP HOME mode every more often. Mine had almost 20K miles without a clean, and last couple of months the thing would go into limp with every more than modest acceleration.

So got myself the WYNN stuff and started. Got the air hose out no time, started the engine, but:
MY engine will not idle with the hose disconnected ('92 2.3FPT CSE auto, TCS) if will stall after some 5 seconds, and when I spray some solvent into the throttle it instantly dies.
Apart from that I cannot really understand how you clean the back of the valve plate coming only from one side. perhaps if you apply a LOT of solvent, it will just gradually disappear into the inlet manifold.
But my throttle housing was so full of tar-like gunk that I was surprised the TPS was able to move the valve around anyway without tilting the system.
That's why I decided to just disconnect the throttle body from the manifold. It is just three bolts. The lower one is hard to reach, but a short wrench 13 gets you there, mine were not that tight. with all hoses connected you can lift it onto the manifold and clean it at your leisure with the WYNN solvent and some rags. Mine looks like newly polished inside. You don't believe what came out of it.
I cannot tell for 100% sure yet, but the TCS seems MUCH less prone now again to failure (didn't happen yet, even when I expected it to go)

What made you decide not to just take the body off? Or is the TCS one different?

What I also did was pour some WYNN into that small hole. Now some of the gunk went with it inevitably. After first restart my idle was at 1500k/ min. After some driving it went down to normal (900).
But some time later I experienced an even lower idle with the selector lever in gear, to the point of having a stall when maneuvring. I also noticed that at the same time the shift points of the autobox have gone up slightly, and shifting is a tad rougher than the normal smooth shift I have. Weird, huh? didnt touch anything else, 'cept the air filter (just opened, inspected, closed. BTW it had some old oil on it at the turbo side).
