whipped rebuilts. I once saw a valve body replaced and the shop considered it a rebuilt transmission. Shifting between 1-2 is an automatic shift and the lurch is proportional to the throttle pressure applied. Usually pretty smooth below 3000-3500 - above definate lurch can be felt. 2-3 is a mechanical shift usually pretty smooth but the 3-4 is usually a pretty rough shift since the fluid coupling is out of the loop in 4. However if running up to freeway merge speeds in 3 will usually result in a fairly smooth shift to 4 if you feather the throttle carefully. It seems the torque of the engine is more closely mated to the lock up feature requirements. That gear is direct above 45 MPH or about 2000 rpm. You may help shifting smoothness by adding a little (4-6 oz) of Lucas or GM rear axle limited slip lube. This softens the bands and allows the clutches to move into detent a little easier. The ZF 4-18 has never been noted for it's smoothness. For your transmission's longivity when moving from P to D or R wait a couple of seconds untill full engagement is obtained before applying engine. It will save your clutches.full engagement will be felt through the brake force- you will also notice a slight increase in rpm.
