I'm surprised that this subject doesn't come up more often.
I am on my 4th Saab (2 auto, 2 5spd) and have always been amazed at how much the a/c compressor effects performance. I can't believe it only uses 5 hp.
At low speeds there is very noticable hesitation and performance drop when tne compressor kicks in and using the computer, about a 5 mpg reduction on the freeway while the compressor runs. It is more noticable with the manual transmission. This botherd me so much that I convenced Saab to replace the compressor on my new C900 and it did not make a difference.
I think the compressor reduces performance between 15% to 20% which would translate into 18 to 20 hp.
Think about it!
Thanks.
