Any chance this ISN'T a tranny rebuild?

Hi all,
My 91 900t (150k) is slipping out of 2nd gear. I know, this pretty much means time to rebuild.
But, I recently lost access to reverse. I checked the shifter, and the ring surrounding the ball had tilted widly aft-ward so I pushed that thing closer to level. (This happened when I bought the car, and this fixed it.) Still no-go, so I checked the rubber block and it was fine...but one of the steel PINS had broken!! I tie-wrapped it tightly, and I thought all was well...
So, could I just have a mushy detent spring? (Can they be accessed from the outside?!)
Should I pull the center console and look at all the mountings? (I think this might be wise) What should I look for?
Or should I stop whining and just start getting ready to rebuild everything? (While I cannot possibly afford this, I have fond memories of rebuilding everything on a 69 Sonett and a 78 99 GLE, so this outcome is a mixed blessing.)
Any tangential thoughts are always welcomed,
Thanks in advance,
Ben
