91 9kT, blown 5spd: Junk it or save it?

Hi all,
Vote if you will, I need to consider.
My 91 9kT 5spd rammed the pinion gear through the bell housing, there's oil slung everywhere. (For those curious, it started as a jumping-out-of-2nd, and locked up once as a warning, then for real.)
No question about this transmission, it is beyond hope.
Eriksson says $1400 trans + about $300 clutch. (Seeking more detail, did that clutch price include slave cyl. & throwout?)
Reliable sources near the car's current resting spot quote $3000 and up for a shop to do the work.
The car is not without flaws, so it is anyone's guess as to what's going next.
So simple calculus + bias: fix it myself* or junk it?**
Thanks
Ben
*I can do a replacement: I just did the motor mounts last week, so the subframe will come off. I have the tools, but the car died about 8 hrs from my house. I can work on it there, I can pack up my tools, and so it's better than saying the car's in an impound lot.
**I'd first offer it up myself, and if I don't sell it by some predetermined deadline I'll call a non-profit and donate it.
