there are two flat batteries in there. If you look at the back of the remote, you see a cover for the battery compartment. You need to open it and replace the batteries.
If you look on the inside of the key ring hole of the remote, near the top, you can see a horizontal slot. Pick a screw drive of appropriate size, put it into the slot and twist, the cover should pop open, at least partially. The rest is somewhat obvious.
It may help to remove the key ring first if you are doing this the first time.
You can go to Staples or even your dealer to get replacement batteries, they are relatively common.
