I thought I'll just quietly drive my SAAB for a while after putting in this new clutch. Not so. Finally put everything together Sunday evening and successfully test drove it for a few miles. This was after assemblying the drivetrain early morning, filled the system with coolant, only to find that it is leaking at the water pump. It never fails. Three time I pull the drive train and install it back again. Every time I went through a new set of o-rings for the water pump. And every time I have to fit the water pump up twice. That means fit the water pump and AC compressor up, install the S-belt, button everything up, found out the coolant leak and repeat again. The only difference this time is I have a spare set of o-rings from Sobstory from the last time so the car does not sit idle one day more.
But my trouble does not end there...
Took the car out to the office this morning. Everything was smooth and fine. Took it out again during lunch. The car feels lively. Shift was precise as usual. Come qutting time, I went in the driver seat. Turned the ignition, the display comes up for a split second. But no crank. Turned the key again, still no crank. Did for the third time, there wasn't even display. Panic set in. So I took a company car and drove home. The contrast between a full size American sedan the design of which is to isolate the driver from the road and the intimate feel between the vehicle and the road for a SAAB is night and day. But that's not what occupies my mind as I drove home.
I don't think what happened was as a result of my taking the drive train apart. It is something electrical and I didn't touch anything electrical. PLus the car ran fine before this. Collecting myself as i drove home, my plan tomorrow morning at the office parking lot will be to try jump starting the car, I thought. If it can be jump started, it's likely the battery. Other than that I am stumped.
I need my fellow SAABers to provide me ammunitions to tackle the problem despite scant input gathered. My hope is my recent SRS light problem was indicative of a spent battery and a new battery would solve it (not the SRS, but the car being stranded in the office parking lot). That may be wishful thinking.
