Blower Motor - fan blades help

I've started on the dreaded heater core/blower motor replacement project. After starting out with the attitude "It couldn't really be that bad..", I've now degenerated into "This is is the worst DIY job I've allowed myself to get into."
Anyway, I got the blower motor out, and I'm now trying to get the fan blades off the old motor. All descriptions I've read describe "gently tapping" or "a few light taps" on the fan shaft with the fan blades supported from below. Well, I've upgraded from light and gentle to damn hard and rough. Still, this thing has not budged at all. I am basically furiously whacking it at this point to no avail. Does anyone have any tricks, suggesions, etc. I'm condiering putting the whole thing in the freezer for a while, but I'm concerned that along with shrinking the metal, the plastic will get brittle and brake on me. I might have no choice though. Can anyone help?
