... expensive cars that very few people could afford, but they would keep them forever. A "Northern-English" friend recently bought a 16-year-old Merc. from the original owner (apologies to those non-UK readers who don't know that "Northern-English" people have a reputation for looking for "value for money"). Nowadays, Mercedes sell up-market, slightly expensive, run-of-the-mill cars that lots of people can afford (on credit) and that they'll want to ditch after two or three years when a trendy new model appears (and they've paid off most of the credit). Lots of gadgets, but true quality doesn't sell cars to the masses. The illusion of quality is a prety good marketing tool, though.
Are they making more or less money now than they were then?
While their shareholders may be very happy now, if I were in the market for a Merc., I'd be looking for a decent example of an '86-'89 model as the new ones are not "good value for money", as my Nothern friend would say. That doesn't help Mercedes' shareholders, though.
Saab compete in the same market as Mercedes.
