Re: recirculation flap. Reason for being Posted by Bryan [Email] (#542) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bryan) on Thu, 9 Jan 2003 17:48:45 In Reply to: recirculation flap, df, Wed, 8 Jan 2003 22:46:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The purpose of the flap on this (or any other car) is so that you stop outside air from entering the cabin for any reason (eg: Polluting truck or badly tuned diesel infront of you). It wasn't really intended to be left recirculating all the time, & certainly wasn't invented because of airconditioners. After all, even cars without aircon have a recirculating mode. Since the advent of aircon, it has been realised that by using recirculating in conjunction with the AC, your airconditioner operates better. That is; why cool hot outside air when you can cool air that is already relatively cool (from being previously passed through).
In my humble opinion (& I live in a hot climate) the benefit of running the aircon with recirculating air is hardly noticable, compared with running the aircon with fresh air. The only time I use it is when those dam deisels are blowing that black stuff infront of me. By the way, studies have shown that if you travel long distances with the vent in recirculating mode & no other fresh air is coming in elsewhere (eg windows), then the driver becomes drowsy much quicker (with the risk of falling asleep at the wheel). If I had to choose 1 or the other, I'd choose an open vent any time (even in a hot climate). Oh, if you don't operate your aircon, then defrosting is harder in recirculating mode (due to stuffy air). Long live fresh air!.
Oh in response to Suo Timo, I don't know of any Saab 9000 that doesn't have at least 1 thing that doesn't work properly, or has had a 'patch' put on because a fix is in the 'too hard basket'. Maybe I've just become a Saab pessimist.
cheers Bryan
