Hi James
I had my windsrceen replaced last year by the company appointed by my insurance company. This was a complete nightmare the whole process took 3 months, 5 (yes five) windscreens, many letters etc. until eventually I was able to use a company recommended by my dealer who did it right.
Check that the glass is central, that none of the trim is loose, the central clips at the top and bottom of the plastic trim are flush, and make sure that the glass is recessed slightly so that the rubber surround is held under tension.
The important parts of the fitting process seem to be:
Fit the two part plastic covered metal cage and the two clips first. The clips should slide on over the ends of the cage parts as they are put into place, they should not be clipped on afterwards! Previously the clips had been put on as the very last thing to be done and had never fitted well.
Apply a V shaped bead of adhesive to the glass - the shape of the bead is important - it shouldn't be a sausage. 2 people must lift the glass and position it in place. This ensures that the adhesive is all the way around the glass and that the bead isn't rolled out of place as can happen when 1 person lifts the glass into place from the side - this causes the wind noise because the glass isn't bonded all the way around.
Use the spare tyre to weight down the glass to ensure that the glass is recessed as it should be - the rubber trim will tend to lift the glass out otherwise. This ensures that the glass is recessed and the rubber trim is held securely against the coachwork - otherwise you can get a harmonica type sound from the rubber trim.
