There is reason to avoid Redline MTL in the 9K manual transaxle. An abnormally high incidence of catastrophic failures have occurred when switching to this product, observed by me, others frequenting this BB, and Townsend Imports. Mine lasted several months before a total failure requiring a complete replacement with a rebuilt unit.
I emailed Redline several years ago about this issue, and without categorically admitting a link to the failures, they suggested that MTL may not be an ideal choice for 9K trannies (too thin).
After owning five Saabs and three 9K's, all with manual transaxles, I would never use anything except the specified fluid, or the new synthetic fluid now offered. As a caveat, it may not be wise to retrofit it in early-generation 9K transaxles (pre-'94) according to some experts, like Erikkson (the rebuilders), even though Saab sanctions it. I performed this transition three years ago in my '95 Aero and the new fluid has been performing very well. There is a procedure that must be followed in the transition, as fossil oil and the new fluid are not compatible.
