Need HELP! Manual Transmission failure at 70K miles!

I have a 96 9000 CSE (2.3T) 5 speed manual transmission with about 70,000 miles. My wife was backing out of the garage when she heard a "thud" (she thought she ran over something). After that, she could not get the car to go into gear (the clutch seemed to engage/disengage normally - but the gearshift could not be placed into any gear).
Had the car towed to the dealer who says the transmission is finished. They have not taken it apart, but say it is "stuck between 2nd and 3rd gear - wants to be in both gears at once."
The dealer wants $3,400 to tear down the transmission, diagnose the problem, and "rebuild" the transmission. There "suggestion" is to put a "remanufactured" transmission in for $3,800.
Called a couple of independents. They suggest putting a used transmission in (2,200).
It seems unbelievable that an adult driven 5 speed with 70,000 miles could fail at this milage. Is it likely that the existing tranny cannot be economically salvaged? Anyone have any similar experience or advice?
