Have just replaced turbo after it finally gave up the ghost on a long run home ( 2.3 Turbo S 9000, 1993 ) kinda expected as you can tell by previous posts.
Turbo is from a breakers & shaft feels pretty solid but turns freely ( mine flopped around inside the housing with a good 1/4" play in every direction when it failed !! )
The car was forced to continue running loosing oil in huge smoke screen for around 10 miles after failure ( motorway ! ) so I thought there was a good chance of fatal engine damage, but changed turbo anyway just to check.
Everything appears fine apart from 2 things
1/ left hand inlet valve area very noisy sounds like oldfashioned valve clearance required but this isnt possible due to hydraulic lifters ? could one of these be shot ? how do you test one ?
2/ Strange & very "crisp" squeal/whine when accelerating at anything other than gentle throttle openings, if car stopped engine gently reved no noise but if "blipped" same sqeal , have checked for vac/turbo leaks, & also harmonic balancer ( just in case ) sound appears to come from around the front right corner of engine but cant be sure, any Ideas ?
