I've never had an exhaust system die, it's always the center muffler (silencer, resonator, whatever) However, the rest of the system isn't usually far behind. I do the easy thing and replace everything back from the catalytic convertor. Undo the two bolts at the rear of the Cat, remove the left rear wheel and cut the pipe going over the rear axle (hacksaw works, sawzall with a metal blade works great), and then simply drop the hangers. Having the left rear jacked up helps, especially when it comes to removing the wheel. Installation with all new parts is easy. I recommend soaking the cat bolts with the Liquid Wrench clone of your choice twice a day for a few days prior to the act. They usually come off fine, and I always put them back with anti-sieze for the sake of future generations.
I haven't bought exhaust systems from eEuroparts, but have been getting them from other SaabNet advertisers for about the same $$. I usually count on around $200 for the complete set (resonator, muffler, hangers, new stainless-steel nuts.)
A straight pipe is a fine solution, depending on where you live. Some places that do emission inspections also inspect the exhaust system, and depending on the inspector, might give you a hassle. The bigger reason not to is that if the resonator is shot, it's unreasonable to assume the rest of the system is in great shape - mufflers rust from the inside out. I'd rather do the whole system now for about $200 (or less!) in parts and a couple of hours of work, than do it again in six months when the muffler perforates.
