I've been using AMSOIL synthetic ATF in my Saabs since AMSOIL put it on the market some 20 years ago. Have yet to have a problem.
If you don't, or won't, use synthetic ATF, it is prudent to change what is in the pan every 15,000 miles or so. If you don't know the history, or if the fluid looks dirty (or smells burned), I recommend doing 3-4 changes in a relatively short time. This will change most of the fluid, without paying a technician for his time.
If you are willing to use synthetic, and your fluid looks good now, just change it over, using 3-4 drain, refill and drive to mix. If your fluid looks bad now, run a case of non-synthetic ATF through first to clean up what you can, then do it with synthetic.
After change to synthetic, at least with AMSOIL ATF, you are probably good for as long as you own the car. If that bothers you, plan to change the 2-3 quarts in the pan every 45-50,000 miles.
