David,
The clutch does return quite a bit after I "release" the pedal with the spring disconnected - I'd say about 2/3 of the way to the top, maybe even a bit more. I was driving it around after this happened by manually lifting the pedal after each stroke with my left foot. Oddly enough, the pedal actually seemed to be getting "pulled" to the floor, and would sink too low for me to recover it after a couple seconds. In looking at the spring, it now seems to me that what was happening is that the geometry of the spring in its incorrect position seemed to be pushing the pedal the opposite direction - down towards the firewall - in the lower half of the pedal stroke.... _very_ weird.
I'm almost at the point of just getting a strong spring from the local hardware store and setting it up in a traditional I.E. 900-style way. Is there anyone one there that could stick a digicam in the area and snap a picture of the way it's supposed to be?
Thanks,
-Jeff
