What I mean was I removed the engine from a parts car (89 9kt with bad transmission), just in case I would ever need it as a replacement for my 88 9kT - sorry Eric, it's the 2 litre, so no good for you! Anyway, that was really pretty easy - but I could cut a bunch of hoses and wires since the donor car was going to the junkyard after I ripped out all the good parts.
I imagine the replacement is somewhat harder - but shouldn't be too bad. I did actually do that with a 1979 VW Polo (European model only - smaller than the Golf), but since there was very little wiring and plumbing in that car, I'd say it is not really comparable to a modern Saab. I had virtually no decent tools in those days either, and it still wasn't bad.
You will need an engine hoist (I borrowed one) - sounds like an excuse for a trip to Harbor Freight!
