I believe what you were feeling is the torque of the engine rocking in its mounts. As you may know, it is a problem area with high-miles 9000's. If the lower mounts (on the right, in front and behind the engine) are bad the engine can move almost 2 inches when you let the clutch out from a stop. Watch the upper one on the right side (left as you face it) of the engine. It is supposed to limit engine movement but the rubber is often broken.
New engine mounts will cost a bit. You have to get it fixed because it will not only affect your shifting, it will crack the exhaust downpipe.
You can get this car for under $2000.
I paid under $2000 for my 88 9000T but everything had already been replaced (PO had receipts totalling many thousands $$).
