Adhesive Removal for Headliner Repair

I'm looking at finally fixing the headliner and "C" pillar covers on my '90 9000 CDT. I've got the "C" pillar covers out, and the tattered material off of them. The adhesive is still there though, in spite of my efforts to remove it. Does anyone have a method to get this off that they can share? I imagine there must be something that will soften or remove the glue. Thanks in advance.
