Just went through this with my 97 aero
Jump the fuel pump fuse with a wire to the hazard fuse with the key off in the area under the airbag. The fuel pump will run if it is fine you may need to pop the hatch to hear it.
If it is not running then bang the tank with a mallet. It may start up and allow you to get back to your garage at least.
Unless you are in for a time consuming project working with one of a kind brittle plastic parts I would personally recommend getting the whole pump assembly from eeuroparts.com
No part of my fuel pump change went smoothly. Stuck ring, broken valve, etc...
Also get the updated check valves to have on hand (brittle plastic does break quite easily) They are dsigned for a larger diam hose so you will need to adapt them somehow to fit the fuel lines. You will need to remove the rubber ball from the return valve (it is different than the stock one )or fuel will not flow back into the tank causing a check engine light (rich condition) More learn by doing experience for meee....
I only needed one new check valve to get it back together but the increased pressure from the new pump caused the old valve to fail causing a vapour lock no start condition
Good Luck
