My '92 9000T 5-speed (120,000m) has had this issue of sometimes not wanting to go into 1st when stopped, ever since I aquired it at 40,000 miles. I have replaced the old-style coupler, and all recently all the motor and transmission mounts. I've gotten into the habit of shifting into 2nd at rest, then into 1st (seems to work fine). Something tells me this is related to shifter forks, or the syncro. Lately the pinion noise has increased, partly due to a poly tranny mount but also before that. Also lately the transmission will "pop" out of 1st if driving at low speeds with on/off throttle (e.g. in a parking lot or something like that). My solution to all this is that a rebuilt tranny is awaiting installation in my garage. Having said that, the first things I suggest you do are ensure that the shifter coupler is in good shape, that the linkage is properly adjusted, and that the clutch is not dragging at all (bleed the system). and then do the simple (1-2 hours) job of replacing the stock tranny mount with a poly one. That made the most enormous difference to shift action, though it's hard to think how it could account for the "locked-out of 1st" phenomenon I think you are describing and that I know too well. My gut feeling is that shifter forks or something in the internal shft mechanism is at fault. For what it's worth, I have also perfected the technique of slowly letting out the clutch as I try to shift into 1st at rest; this allows the tranny to go into 1st quite easily but the timing is delicate or you can load the tranny before things are fully engaged in there. All said, my old Volkswagen Fox shifted far neater and positively, but I am hoping that the rebuilt tranny will fix that. Must be a design flaw in there somewhere and I'm curious to see what others on this BB have to add.
