More on my lack of heat problem

I posted about a week ago about the luke warm air coming out of my vents - not enough to heat the cabin comfortably on a 35 degree morning. I changed the thermostat - no improvement. Some suggested a problem with the mixer flap, but that seems to operate (the arm is still attached and when I move the temperature control from low to high the air definitely gets warmer).
So tonight I borrowed an infrared thermometer (what a cool toy!!). The radiator top hose was 180F/82C - exactly where it should be. The heater core inlet hose was 150F/65C and otlet was 130F/54C. I would have thought the heater core inlet hose should also be about 82C, and the fact that it's significantly cooler seems to imply the heater core is plugged. Does anybody agree?
If so, will a chemical flush help or is it the dreaded heater core replacement time?
The one thing I have read on the Townsend website is that the t'stat also somehow controls the water to the heater core. Not sure how this works, but is it worth trying a third t'stat just in case?
Thanks
Rod
