Sounds like the slave cylinder is seized, in a position that holds the clutch disengaged. Hard to believe, because the clutch spring force is "considerable". However, that clutch is clearly disengaged and no movement being seen at the slave with pedal movement, it is stuck in the "disengaged" position. The noise you hear would be the thrust bearing. Be careful that slave doesn't pop release when you're standing there peering into the engine bay with the car in gear and the engine running!
I just replaced the transmission on my 92 9KT (180,000 km), and the (obviously well-abused!) slave on the "rebuilt" I got was full of a thick waxy deposit that had me wondering how it could possibly have functioned. Took some doing to dismantle it, for curiosity's sake. Makes the case for regular brake/clutch fluid changes.
Sounds like you might well have to pull that slave cylinder.
