Greetings, All,
Danger! Warning! Owners of '93-98 9000s better get on this right away. If it hasn't happened yet, it will. One day, you pull the hood release and it doesn't. Most of the time, the cable is NOT broken, but one of the hood locking pins is jammed in the latch.
To prevent this from happening, do the following three steps:
1. Rotate the rubber hood stop bumpers located on the outer edges of the radiator/fender support about 1/2 turn counter-clockwise or as required to keep the hood level with the fenders. Over the years, these bumpers compress and allow the hood to drop too low.
2. Remove the grille - three screws at the top - to gain access to the hood latches. Adjust the pins on the hood so they just latch. In no case may the latch recess on the pins drop below the bottom of the latch. This is what causes the hood to fail to open.
3. Adjust the release cable - it has stretched some by now. Find an allen wrench to back out the set screw on the left, passenger's end, use pliers to pull the cable tight, move the cable stop so it is against the latch loop and tighten the cable stop set screw. Repeat on the driver's side.
4. Lubricate the latch mechanism, cable and pins with Lubriplate or equivalent.
