I recently (about 3,000 miles ago) installed an apparently "rebuilt" (taking others' word for it) 5-speed in my 92 9KT and at first all was well. However the temperature got down to minus 30 centigrade (that's minus 22 Fahrenheit) for a few days and on start-up I could hear a horrible metal-on-metal sound from the unit. Oil was fresh 10-40, topped up. Once the tranny warmed up things got much quieter, but I could still hear a soft noise when the car was stopped in neutral (it goes away, slowly, after I press the clutch, i.e. as the driven shaft slows down and stops. So I know this isn't the throw-out bearing, which was new with the tranny. I had installed a drain plug, so I just drained it tonight and to my horror the oil looked like metallic paint with lots of bronze in there, nothing ferrous it seems as a magnet didn't atteract anything. What gives? I refilled it with Saab synthetic, just because I had some on hand. Any other suggestions, besides moving to Arizona?
