I had the same signs. The computer display stayed very dim and would occasionally switch to the brightest mode after the engine was on for an hour or so. It turned out to be the photoresistor. I replaced it with the only phototransistor Radio Shack stocks with fairly good results. Its now a little brighter than it should be but it dims at night. If you do a search of this forum with "phototransistor" you should come up with details on how to replace it. Tips: (1), The Radio Shack replacement sits a bit higher on the circuit board. Grind a bit off the internal end of plastic light pipe so you can reassemble the case of the trip computer. (2) There are only two ways to mount the replacement on the circuit board. If you get no response reverse the conections.
