The stuff wrong with your car doesn't really sound like much more than $1200 to $1500 assuming you got a tank from a wrecking yard, and that's paying soemone else to do it. And you wouldn't have to fix all of it at once. This of course assumes the rest of the engine and drivetrain are in good condition. The question is what could you buy for what your car is worth (and it won't much with a bad head gasket and 168K) and $1500? More than likely it will simply be a car that has different (and unknown) problems. It's almost always cheaper to fix an existing car unless it's rusted to a point of being structurally unsound. The real problem with the car is in your head. Try this. Have your car professionally detailed, have a body shop fix the dent and give the paint a wet sand/buff-out-- it'll look like a new car. An interior shop can replace the worn panels. Do this along with the mechanical stuff and you'll actually WANT to continue driving it--which is really the crux of the matter, isn't it? I make a living buying cars in similar condition that people stopped wanting. I give them the treatment outlined aboved and you can't beleive the difference. I sell them for a profit and my customers love them.
