Getting your bearings Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Tue, 15 Mar 2005 08:27:38 In Reply to: Bosch alternator bearings, techlectic, Mon, 14 Mar 2005 22:44:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I would also guess the noise is coming from the idler or tensioner pulley bearings, but if you do the other auditory testing and determine that it is indeed the alternator bearings, I have a few ideas:
1. A bearing store. Yes, these actually exist, look in the yellow pages. A chain in Chicago is called Berry Bearings.
2. A shop that rebuilds auto electric components, i.e. alternators, starters, etc.
Many years ago, I replaced the bearings in a Bosch alternator on an Audi. The bearings were a standard size, easy to find replacements. The originals were an open bearing design, prone to failure, I replaced them with some much higer quality sealed bearings - they are probably still turning freely at the bottom of a slag heap somewhere. I have to believe that Bosch has upgraded the quality of the bearings they use on alternators designed for serpentine belt systems.
