But seriously, there's really no easy way to determine when one would fail. You might be able to lift the belt off of the top pulley, then spin the pulley by hand and see if it 'feels' ok. However, because it affects so many other ancillaries, I think it's a good idea to go by intervals. It's no fun losing power steering at low speeds, but at higher speeds, you might not even notice it. And sometimes, we don't always keep an eye on the gauges. It's not inconceivable that someone could operate the vehicle for a while, not knowing that the water pump had stopped because the pulley shredded the serpentine belt. So, it's an interesting question but I'd say if the pulley is healthy, there's no way of determining how long it will stay healthy. And, even if it's imminently about to fail, one still cannot say, with precision, exactly when it will - I'm sure there's some profound quantum mechanical explanation, like the uncertainty principle, for this - aw heck, they're not that expensive, so just change it, get a new belt and forget about it for another 50k - that's the interval I use, whether it needs one or not. I do carry a spare serpentine belt in the boot, now you've got me thinking I should put a pulley in there, too!
