it's pretty much terrible in practice.
You have to have just the right conditions for soldering, as it relies on good electrical contact on both conducting surfaces, and if there's any oxidation, or if you're trying to work on a freehanging item like wires, it's very difficult to get sufficient current flowing to heat up the joint. It's useful only in a very limited set of conditions, and the tips are very delicate. Essentially it's like a split electrode "arc welder" using tips with low specific heat, so it cools off immediately after the current flow stops. Soldering anything with greater mass like a large lug results in yucky joints where the solder can only be applied in spots, because the heat is focused in just a small spot.
If you want portability, you'd be much better off with a portable butane iron.
The commercials showing them tacking on chains for jewelry is laughable-
If you must try it though, Costco had them for $15.97 or so, I believe.
