I'm not saying that an oil bath won't shorten the mortality, but I have seen completely dry ones fail, though not on a 9000. Rubber, as an engineering material, will fail with age. I've seen them on V-6 Jeep Cherokees. Same basic design -rubber between the two pieces. On this particular Cherokee, it was discovered through the instrument gauges. My friend noticed that the voltage would occassionally drop - from 14 down to 0! Thinking it was the voltage regulator, it was changed, but the problem persisted. Upon closer examination, we noticed that the serpentine belt was actually varying speed while the engine rpm's were constant. Revving the engine actually caused the belt to occassionally stop! I can say this with absolute conviction - I'd rather change the pulley on the 9000 than a Cherokee. At least the 9000 designers gave mechanics access to that area through the wheelwell. The Cherokee was a real PITA!
