As an independent dealer I'm always amazed when people ask me (or do a car fax thing)if a twelve year old car that's selling for $2K has been in an accident. To me it's about like cruising bars and asking the 40 year old women (or men)you meet if they're virgins. Who knows, who cares and what possible difference could it make? I can understand it on a car that's two or three years old, or an extreme case where a car wasn't fixed right and is dangerous. But unless it has a salvage title or is showing obvious signs of problems, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If a car is properly fixed, it can actually be straighter then it was when it came from the factory. The real key is the condition it is in NOW. Since you know it was hit pretty hard, pay a body shop to give it the once over. If they don't find any issues, buy it and don't worry. It's just like figuring the mechanical condition--if you don't know what to look for pay a mechanic to look at it.
