Hi Julia--
Red is the color for '93 or later 9Ks. (and maybe some NG 900s---not sure)
Black is in 9-5s and probably 9-3s. (but will supposedly work in a 9K. Cost more, though, IIRC, intended to work with the T7 ECU, not the T5 in a 9K).
Blue is supposedly the test DIs that dealers use to determine if a customer's DI is in fact, bad.
I've thought a lot about used DIs and I think they are a good plan as a spare, but not to count on one for your daily driver. As most have noted, they can die suddenly. Last fall I decided that if my DI dies, I want to start fresh, so I sprung for a new one.
I carry it on trips, simply because I want to avoid dealing with sudden DI failure away from home without a Saab parts source nearby. The nature of life is that the DI will leave one stranded as far as possible from a parts and repair source. Probably at night, in the rain, and where the cell phone doesn't work. And even if it dies at the doorway to a Saab indy, you'll get charged $450 to $600 for the part and at least $50 for a five minute install. Plus anything else they think they can hose you for.
I look at it like this. I can get a used one for between $100 and $150. If the one in the car dies, I will still have to buy another used one as a spare. But a new one is much less likely to fail, so I would probably go without a spare once the new one is installed. So the cost is about the same, but reliability *should* be greater. Of course we are dealing with electronics that can be a little shaky , so YMMV.
;-)
FWIW, my daughter's '95 CS had it's original DI installed before we bought it. That was at 130K. So it has a new DI as of last fall. So in a way, I have a used spare available, if I really needed it!
