Actually the alternator (and lower bolt on the C900 can be removed while the engine is in the car. I had to replace my bushings so I had to get it all out. Trick turned out to be to undo two bolts of the alternator bracket and then just use the alternator to tilt the entire bracket upwards. Just enough room to get the bolt out and take the alternator out. I did that two weeks ago and it was fun (about 4 hours of fun actually). No excursions into the darker areas of my vocabulary, just laughing everytime I tackled the next obstacle. I mus admit that it reminded me of the two heater cores I did on our 9000's. I'm still not sure which of the two jobs I rather (not?) do: heater core on the 9000 or alternator on the C900. Hmmm.
I also have a 9-5 and there seems to be a nice lever in the air distribution box that can break. When I look at the official procedure I think it will be a magnitude worse than the C900 / 9000 stuff. No cursing, no laughing, just crying. By the way, the heater core problems on the 9000 are courtesy of Valeo (French). At least that was the brand in my 9000's.
The air distribution box in the 9-5 is also made by Valeo......
