Good that you wrote the year of your car. All 1996+ cars sold in the US are required to have an OBD-II diagnostic port, with a somewhat (not completely) standardized interface. You can get the trouble code(s) read for no charge at many major autoparts stores, i.e. Autozone, or they will "loan" you the tool to do it - they are hoping that you will buy the needed repair parts from them.
Based on the symptom you described, the first thing I would look at is the vacuum hoses, which are now almost ten years old on your car.
