I know you have loads more experience than me, but I would just replace the engine with a used one. One reason that used car are cheap is because you can take advantage of the depreciation of otherwise good machinery. Once you start replacing parts on an old used engine with new parts, thats an expensive repair dollar for mile. A well cared for replacement used engine should last you a loooong time.
