Crank Pulley Removal

Hi,
Hoping some more knowledgable Saab owners might help me out here:
I'm trying to remove the crank pulley (harmonic balancer) on a 1995 9K 5-speed. I've searched the postings, but I'm still stuck.
The '95 doesn't have a sight hole through to the flywheel - no easy way to stop the engine from turning over. The 4th-gear trick (per Haynes) does not seem to work at all - In 4th gear, every time I put any leverage on the crank pulley bolt, the engine and the driveshafts just start turning.
I see two options at this point (maybe both): 1. Rent an impatct wrench 2. Remove the starter so I can stick something in the flyweel.
Any ideas? (I'm not eager to try the Townsend trick w the breaker bar against the a-arm.)
Thanks and regards,
Gabe
