I've done this in two cars, and it works good in both (88 and 92 turbos).
Top space = radio
Middle space = cupholder/coinholder
Bottom space = CD player
And the large bin at the bottom.
Note about the cupholder, though. Cold drinks, especially in summer, will drip condensation down onto the space in front of the shifter. I got mine for the morning coffee cup (and finding a travel mug that fit securely was a whole other story), so that's not really a problem for me.
I took one of the blank "buttons" to the immediate left of the center console, and drilled it out so that the cigarette lighter fits in it. I plug either my cell phone charger of the Transpod for my iPod shuffle in it.
Nice and clean--the other thought that I had was running wires through the central tunnel and placing the lighter in the flip-out ashtray for the backseat passengers.
I could try and post some pictures if you're really interested.
Good luck.
