The rattlely, grindy noise from my turbo (95 CSE) was due to the waste gate control rod mis-adjustment. The waste gate was not up against its stop, i.e., wasn't closing all the way. Apparently the "slop" of the waste gate disk on its shaft is normal, based upon the condition of my 92 9KT, which didn't make the offending noise. Also, based upon the way the wastegate is set in the 92 9KT, i.e., flush up hard against its port in the turbo with engine off (of course the engine is off!), I adjusted the 95 CSE to be the same way. Noise is gone * car has nice turbo thrust.
BTW, twas a real pain getting the wastegate control rod off of the wastegate lever arm. There was no circlip, just rust that felt that way. There was no cotter pin either (was someone else in there earlier on?). When I put it back together, I forgot to put the cotter pin on BEFORE connecting the exhaust pipe. My hands wouldn't fit, but fortunately the pair on my 11 year old son did!
