From the Trionic manual-
If the IAS signal is open or shorted, the Trionic uses a default value of 8 degrees C (46F) for intake air temp.
The engine control uses IAS and MAP to determine air mass and engine load, and schedules fuel based on that. So if the intake temperature is warmer than 8C, fuel will be scheduled based on air that is denser (and has more oxygen) than is really the case. So it's my assumption that the engine will tend to run lean with a bad IAS. There won't be a noticeable impact to MPG, but the system is relying on the knock detection to protect the engine. Performance will be down some, and the engine will be running hotter than normal.
And don't think that cold weather gets you off the hook - remember, this is measured after the turbocharger. Even with intercooling, intake air temp will be warmer than outside air.
