Just did the same job to my 1998. If you just pull hoses off without drainning the system, you'll loose about 1 pint of coolant, which spills down the transmission block. I put a big turkey roaster pan under the car which got most of it. The rest I pickup up with paper towels and speedy-dry.
(1) drain radiator (optional)
(2) remove the large air intake hose (the big elbo) to the throttle body. Take it off the throttle body and the intake pipe.
(3) disconnect the small water hose that attaches to the upper throttle body (disconnect from the throttle body)
(4) disconnect the large vacuum hose from the valve cover (pull the PVC out of the valve cover). Swing this hose out of the way. You may need to remove the motor hoist bracket just above the thermostat if this is in the way, otherwise you can't get the large vacuum hose out of the way.
(5) disconnect the radiator hose at the thermostat housing.
(6) remove the two 10mm bolts on the thermostat housing and swing the bracket that they secure out of the way.
(7) remove the two 13mm bolts holding the housing to the head.
(8) remove thermostat housing
(9) remove the thermostat
clean things up. Note how to install the rubber gasket onto the new thermostat, and be sure that the small hole in the thermostat plate is facing upperward when you put the thermostat into the cylinder head. This is how the system purges itself of air. Then do steps 9 -> 1, substuting "remove" with "replace", and "out of the way" with "back in the way". Then top up the coolant level, run the car, and check it frequently for the next few days.
See, not so bad. Enjoy your heat.
