I went from a '93 Aero to an '01 Aero 5-speed. Reliability-wise, it's been day and night--the 9-5's been the best car, much less Saab I've had.
I drive mine quite hard, go 7-8k miles between oil changes (full synth only). Just had the valve cover gasket changed last week at 163.5k miles during an oil change at my dealer. Zero sludge, chain tight. BTW, this was the first time, ever, having even taken a look under the valve cover., I've had the I bought the '01 new, and while from time to time, I miss having the massive cargo room, I far prefer the 9-5 as a driver. I missed having the trucklike capability of the 9000 enough to pick up another old 9kT as a beater car.
The 9-5's much quieter, better screwed-together. The Aero's are light-feeling in the steering, too, but I understand the '02- cars were better (lots of changes in that first MCE). Also, the '01 seats are standard 9-5 issue, while the '02- cars have sportier seating.
