How long did you leave the jumpers connected? If the battery is really dead, then you will have to leave it connected for about ten minutes before trying to start.
If you get it started, while the engine is running, check the voltage at the battery. You should see 13.6 to 14.0 volts. If you see anything less than the alternator is bad or your connections are corroded.
If you see the proper voltage and connections are clean, then you need a new battery.
If your battery is five years old or more, go get a new one anyway.
