Ever since I bought this car, i have had a mysterous clunk or pop that sounds like its coming from the front right wheel.
The pop comes under load and it only audible at low speeds in low gear/high torque situations. In first or second gear in a parking lot, for example, if you press the accelerator, it pops and when you let off the accelerator, it pops again. First thought was motor/transmission mounts. However, if i leave the parking brake on, and load up the drivetrain in 1st gear, it pops once. If I do it again in 1st, it doens't pop. But if I do it in reverse gear it pops, but not again until I put it back in 1st. If it were an engine/tranny bushing I'd expect it to pop a second time immediately upon unloading the drivetrain. There is also no excessive engine movement and the bushings apear to be okay.
I pulled the inner fender skirts and had a friend load up the direvtrain as mentioned above as looked past the wheel to the axle. It looks like the center carrier bearing gives when the popping occurs, but I can't see anything behind that. At this point I feel it may be the a bad center carrier bearing. But is there something deeper that it could be?
How big a job is it to replace this bearing?
Any thoughts on what else it could be?
Otherwise the car drives well, but it has been getting worse recently (it pops more frequently and under lighter load conditions). Thanks in advance for the input.
